Sheet Moss (Hypnum curvifolium)

Sheet moss gets its name from the way it grows like a sheet across the ground.

It is one of the few plants that falls under the category of “Bryophytes”, meaning that it has no root system and is able to absorb water and nutrients directly through its leaves.

Whether you are wrapping a root ball in sheet moss to make a kokedama or topping a potted plant, sheet moss will work as a light barrier to help retain water and keep the soil moist.

Sheet moss is best cared for by lightly misting it with water as needed so that it never dries out. If your moss begins to feel crisp or it is losing its green color, it needs more water and humidity. Be careful of forced heating during the winter as it dries out the air in your home more than usual. On the flip side, be mindful of direct sunlight during peak summer months, as moss like to grow in shady, humid environments.
